CLUBS SPONSORED BY THE LIBRARY The library sponsors a number of clubs throughout the school year. Among the many book clubs offered are Book Buddies, Middle School Book Club for gr. 5-8, Intermediate Book Club for gr. 3-5, Primary Book Club for gr. 2-3 & 1st graders reading above grade level, and the Family Reading Night. The library also sponsors the Birthday Book Club. Information about this club is on a separate paper in the registration packet. Book Buddies is offered twice during the school year. In this club older students from grades 3-8 read to younger students from grades Pre-K through 2. The first session will last about 6-8 weeks starting in October and will be for students in grades 1-2. The second session will also last about 6 weeks and will begin in January for grades Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten. Each session will be held after school from 2:45-3:15 p.m. one day a week (usually Mondays) in the library. Students are dismissed from the doors to the back parking lot at the end of the Intermediate hall. The Middle School Book Club (gr. 5-8) meets in the fall for 4-8 weeks. Interested students will meet with the librarian early to select a book. Intermediate Book Club (gr. 3-5) meets in the winter for 4-8 weeks. The Intermediate Book Club will read the novel selected for the Academic Competition for grades 4-5. The Primary Book Club (gr. 2-3 & independent readers in gr. 1) runs about 4 weeks in the spring. The books for the Primary Book Club are usually picture books, often Caldecott Award winners. At each weekly book club meeting we discuss what we read at home over the last week and usually do some activities related to the reading. Activities may include drawing, writing, acting, and/or using the Smartboard. Each meeting is held in the library from 2:45-3:30 p.m. once a week (usually on Tuesdays). Students are responsible for providing their own copies of the book(s) to be read. The assigned book or books may be purchased for a discounted price through the library (I usually order from Carmichael’s) at the time of sign-up for the club. Students are dismissed from the outside entrance to the library. Family Reading Night is scheduled in conjunction with Read Across America in March. At this club students in grades Pre-K through 1 come to school one evening with a parent or other adult family member to share books and related activities. |
