Counseling Services Curriculum

Ms. Pam Cook

In my position as a part-time counselor, my tasks are varied. I work with students who have learning differences. I meet with students who are experiencing emotional problems. Finally, I visit classes K – 8 and teach skills the students need to become well-rounded, happy people. The following information summarizes the concepts taught in each grade.

In grades 6 - 8, we use the Life Skills Program provided by the Archdiocese. We cover the following topics:

  • Self-esteem and self-improvement
  • Making decisions
  • Coping with anger
  • Communicative skills
  • Assertiveness
  • Drug abuse and violence
  • Media influences
  • Resisting peer pressure

In grades K – 6, we use the Good Touch, Back Touch program, a comprehensive child abuse prevention curriculum, in which children are taught:

  • The kinds of abuse
  • Body safety rules
  • What actions to take if they’re threatened or victimized
