Computer CurriculumMrs. Melinda CecilThe computer program at St. Athanasius offers all students in grades K – 8 structured classes each week. It is our objective to provide each student with lessons in touch keyboarding, basic understanding of computer technology and educational software programs that support the overall curriculum. We follow the scope and sequence of skills as directed by the Archdiocese of Louisville. Many projects are coordinated with the librarian, classroom teacher, and computer teacher. Each grade will be exposed to both conceptual and hands-on lessons. Each grade builds upon skills and knowledge learned in the previous grade. Our network and computers run from a Windows environment. We currently have about a 3:1 ratio of workstations to students. In addition to workstations, we utilize the Alphasmart keyboards, Neo keyboards, Writer keyboards and a set of wireless handhelds called Novas. Many of our rooms utilize the Smartboard technology, an interactive white board, for instruction. All software is previewed for appropriate content and is legally purchased. A variety of software is used to achieve the objectives of the lesson. The school does have access to the Internet via DSL service through Bell South. We request a signed computer user agreement giving permission for the student to access the filtered Internet resources. All faculty members have been instructed to CLOSELY monitor children on the Internet. Each class is given very specific directions as to what is permissible and the consequences if the student chooses to use the Internet inappropriately. We strive to teach students ethical, responsible Internet/Computer use.
