Student Council The Student Council at St. Athanasius is a tightly bonded group of students ranging from the fourth to eighth grades. The Student Council consists of a President, President Elect, Secretary, Treasurer, two Publicity people, and Photographer and four homeroom representatives from each class. The Vice President is elected during his or her seventh grade year and the position is held until the following year when he or she becomes President. The candidates write speeches and once they are presented to the fourth through eighth grades, they are voted on. Only the fourth through eighth graders get to vote. Then those who wish to run for homeroom rep turn in a permission slip (which is required for all positions in Student Council) and their classmates vote for two reps. The two highest scoring students in their class become reps. Mrs. Thompson, the music teacher at St. Athanasius, is the responsible adult who helps run the Student Council. The Student Council sponsors many of the events held throughout the year to benefit different organizations. Every year, representatives go Angel Tree Shopping for a 13 or 14 year old at the Jefferson Mall; the Student Council prepare and serve a meal at the Ronald McDonald House; sponsor four out of uniform days a year, and raise money to help a small group of eighth graders pay for Catholic High School (Eighth Grade Scholarships). The Student Council organizes a Walk a Thon and host the Talent Show. The Ronald McDonald House is a place where out of town parents with children being treated at St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital, can stay for a small fee. The Student Council sell suckers to the students which help raise funds. The Walk a Thon is walking around the school as many times possible in a given, end of the day time frame, throwing tickets with student names on them into a bucket every time the student passes the starting point. When the Walk is over, the students return to class to wait for the door prizes to be given away. The Student Council plays a large role at St. Athanasius. They make signs and help make every school year more fun and memorable thanks to their crazy out of uniform ideas that continue to be tradition. |
